Our Story & Mission
Sometimes disappointments, misfortunes and poverty bring
opportunities…..And boy with
vision, there’s always opportunity…
Class was born, Clearstine Smith. She lived in a small country like
area Trenton, NC,
sometimes referred to as Jones County - a small town where most
everyone knew each other. In
the late 40’s and early 50’s, Class was a young girl with hopes and
dreams with very little
to go on, except her own self generated motivation.
Born the 1st of sharecroppers, she worked in the tobacco fields to
support the family make
money. During those times, that’s what families did. They farmed.
Unlike today’s times that
was the children’s duties – farming. They all worked long and hard
hours.
Class knew what needed to be done, so she did it – she rarely made a
sound about it, she
simply did it…Taught by her grandmother, she knew what is was to
work long and hard hours
for the family and what it meant to make the best of what you have.
Class learned to cook, but more than the cooking she loved
experimenting, discovering what
taste was good to her. She made homemade cakes and biscuits,
anything she could experiment
with she did…
When she completed her duties of the cooking and the cleaning,
shelling the beans and peas,
bringing in the wood for their wood heater, canning the
vegetables…she would go in the
kitchen - …
She recalls one Christmas that after her father cut down their
Christmas tree from the woods
down the street, she and her sister would make decorations for their
Christmas tree while
her mother would make different kind of cakes, fruit cakes, marble
cakes, different colors –
she would always think of how pretty they were. Class was fascinated
by the cakes.
Times were challenging for Class and her sisters and brothers. They
worked in the fields for
money to purchase their school clothes and sometimes the money they
made wasn’t enough for
everything they needed. So, the siblings shared lots of things, but
one thing she wanted was
to be her own boss, not working for anyone else.
After her big graduation from high school she got married to a
wonderful man and had three
girls. When she married this wonderful guy, he called her
“Classy”…What a name for such a
classy lady, and she wore it well…You see, Classy is such a poised,
graceful humbling
spirit. You’ll fall in love with her when you meet her. Rarely
raising her voice, graciously
smiling she’s filled with a lot of love…
There was a part of her that still wanted her own business but
wouldn’t dare put herself
first now that she had three precious little girls. But she still
baked things for her
friends and other events.
She discovered just how passionate she was about it and the
opportunity to serve others when
her best friend was terminally ill. Her friend asked her to make a
cake for her – one of her
favorites. While money was tight for Class, she couldn’t deny her
that request. So, she pull
together what she had and made her favorite cake – her friend loved
it….Her friend lost her
life, but what she learned that day was there is something as simple
as what I love to do
that can make another person’s day brighter. You never know what a
simple thing could do for
another…Something as simple as baking a cake.
If she could do it for her friend how many others could she do that
for……?
The day finally came in 2003 when she would find out……Class’s full
time job moved to
Mexico….Unbeknownst to Class, Her vision had come closer to reality.
Afraid that life would
again bring forth financial challenges, she made some candy and took
it to the local
Farmer’s Market thinking she could make a “little” quick cash……and
every Saturday morning,
EVERY Saturday morning she went she sold out…..Her friends encourage
her to start a
business, and her girls all agree – Classy’s Chocolates would be
it’s name!!!!…….
This little tale she’ll never forget – When she first started one
Saturday morning, she
decided to take some candy and cake. A little boy about 10 years old
came by and bought some
of the goodies. He ran away to visit some other places at the
market. Then he came back and
got some more goodies. A few minutes later he came back again, and
again, and finally he
said, “mame this was soooooooo good. You wouldn’t want to give out
the recipe, would ya?”
Classy smile, looked up at the little gentlemen and said, “Well, my
friend, I’m afraid,
you’ll have to keep coming back to see me!!!!
And that’s what most of Classy’s chocolates customer do…They just
keep coming back for
more!!!
